Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth: the transformation of an icon

Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth: the transformation of an icon

Montreal, August 30th 2017 – After being closed for more than a year for major renovations, Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth hotel re-opened this July. The project was executed by the architectural consortium of Sid Lee Architecture | Architecture49, with general contractor Pomerleau. The Montreal office of Architecture49 is proud to have contributed to this high-profile project.

Architecture49’s mandate was to prepare plans and specifications developed jointly with Sid Lee Architecture. The firm was then responsible for site supervision until the project’s completion, managing a tight schedule and exacting requirements. Working in close collaboration with all participants, the team made an essential contribution to the successful completion of a high-quality project that will benefit the hotel’s guests, operator and owner.

Sid Lee Architecture created the vision for the hotel’s repositioning and developed architecture and interior design concepts in collaboration with owner Ivanhoé Cambridge and operator Fairmont Hotels. Working to the high standards of the prestigious Fairmont brand, the designers created environments open to the city, encouraging local and international clienteles to embrace the legendary hotel’s living and work spaces. The transformation included the modernization of some 950 guest rooms and suites and the creation of new public spaces such as the Grand Hall, the Agora, a business campus, Marché Artisans, Rosélys restaurant, Nacarat bar and Krema café.

Built in 1958 as a world-class modern hotel, the Queen Elizabeth has played a role in numerous key Montreal events and hosted an impressive number of heads of state, influential businesspeople and celebrities, contributing to the international stature of the hotel, the city and Canada. It remains Canada’s largest hotel east of Toronto.
