Construction starts on Montreal’s ABB Campus
Montreal, November 3rd 2015 – The Montreal office of Architecture49 is proudly working with Broccolini on the construction of the new ABB head office, here in Montreal. ABB specializes in technology and automation and their headquarters will include over 300,000 square feet. housing research and development, testing and assembly. The new state-of-the-art facility will also include demonstration areas and spaces for training customers.
Architectre49 architects have designed a six-floor office tower as well as a building for research and development. Windows face North, making use of natural light for the working lab spaces, and paying special attention to the minimization of glare. Visible from Hymus boulevard, the new build is targeting LEED silver certification. The implementation of a green roof, the preservation of mature trees, an urban setting that prioritizes pedestrians and cyclist access, the inclusion of electrical terminals for electric cars and easy access to public transportation are all part of this sustainable mandate. By 2017 over 700 employees will be housed in these new spaces.
The ABB Campus was realized through a collaboration with Dupras Ledoux (mechanical and electrical engineering), SBSA (structural engineering) and Lemay (interior design).
A little history
In 1955, six architects with strong personalities, vision and from varied backgrounds founded Affleck, Desbarats, Dimakopoulos, Lebensold, Michaud and Sise. The firm took the name of Arcop in the 70’s, an acronym of Architects in Co-Partnership. In 2014, six architecture bureaus joined that partnership, fusing complementary talents and services into one pan-Canadian entity: Architecture49. Made strong by its team of over 50 architects, technicians and designers, the Montreal office of Architecture49 distinguishes itself through its well established practice, and its mastery of large-scale project management and complex programming, seen most notably in their heritage practice. Among its current projects of note are the ABB Campus in Montreal, the Grande-Allée Armoury in Quebec City and the Eastern and Western block of Parliament Hill.
