Jacques Cartier Staircase
Year 2018
Location Montreal, Quebec
Client Jacques Cartier + Champlain Bridges
Mandate New construction
Images Raphaël Thibodeau
Description
The mandate was for the construction of a staircase to link the deck of the Jacques Cartier Bridge to Saint-Charles Street in Longueuil. The staircase is a sculptural object that is both opaque and transparent, marking its presence day and night. The staircase is made entirely of galvanized steel in which a linear and functional LED lighting is integrated. The steps, landings and railings are made of grating constructed from galvanized steel sections. Steel plates are integrated to allow for the circulation of bicycles. Taking advantage of the views that open onto the Jacques Cartier Bridge, the structure is punctuated with lookouts to make the descent and ascent segmented with breaks. The staircase becomes more than a utilitarian piece of equipment and allows several users to cross each other while offering spectacular stops and views of the river, the City of Montreal and the City of Longueuil.
